These books are for use by Reception and Year 1 children, either progressing from Dandelion Readers Units 1 to 20 or as an additional resource in conjunction with any other phonic reading programme.

Levels 1, 2 and 3 introduce the learners to the different spellings of a particular vowel sound

Level 1 series:

  • comprises 10 books, each with one spelling for the target vowel sound from the Extended Phonic Code. e.g. the first book "The Mail" introduces the spelling <ai> for the sound 'ae'.
  • The books are compatible with "Letters and Sounds" Phases 3 and 4.  They can be used in any order and therefore with any phonic programme a school is teaching.

Level 2 series:

  • comprises 10 books, each with three spellings for a sound from the Extended Phonic Code. e.g. The first book "Viv Wails" introduces the spellings <ai>, <ay> and <a> for the sound 'ae'.
  • This level is suitable for any programme that introduces more than one alternative spelling for a sound in the Extended Phonic Code.
  • It can be used for Year 1 pupils expanding their knowledge of the Extended Phonic Code or as a reading intervention resource for older pupils. The books are compatible with "Letters and Sounds" Phase 5.

Level 3 series:

  • comprises 10 books, each with four or five spellings for a sound from the Extended Phonic Code. e.g.  The first book  "Jake the Snake" introduces the spellings <ai>, <ay>, <a>, <a-e> and <ea>.
  • This level is suitable for any programme that introduces more than one alternative spelling for a sound. The books are compatible with "Letters and Sounds" Phase 5.
  • This level can be used for Year 1 pupils expanding their knowledge of the Extended Phonic Code or as a reading intervention resource for older pupils.

Level 4 Series:
