Literacy for Life Year Five: Spellings, Paragraphs and Compound Words. |
|||||
|
The three books in Spellings, Paragraphs and Compound Words cover the term-by-term requirements of the National Literacy Strategy for Year 5. The same logical format is used to reinforce word families and to continue to further develop skills, while introducing new concepts. Dictionary work is included to encourage children to research new words and widen their vocabulary. The range of words in Year 5 is considerable. Exercises point out patterns. The pupils need to see the relationships between root words and how they can be changed and become compound words by the addition of suffixes and prefixes. The short stories can be used for both dictation and reading practice. The use of paragraphs has been added. These passages are varied to give pupils an awareness of the different kinds of writing. Some are imaginitive fiction and some are amusing anecdotes and even a rather far fetched menu to comprehend! Questions are asked to test the pupils comprehension and suggestions for further research using a variety of sources. On some pages, some idiomatic expressions and sayings have been inserted for further discussion as to their use and meaning. |
